art press 2, n° 12, February/March/April 2009:
CONSERVING TECHNOLOGY-BASED ART: ISSUES AND SOLUTIONS
Does the notion of an original artwork still mean anything when applied to a video installation for which the equipment is quickly outmoded and therefore regularly renewed? How does one "conserve" a work that circulates freely on the Internet? And how does one "restore" a work conceived using now obsolete software? In this issue, produced in collaboration with DOCAM (Documentation and Conservation of the Media Arts Heritage), curators and museum directors, artists and art historians offer their experience and opinions in this challenging are.
The launch event will include a presentation by Alain Depocas and Jean Gagnon on the new issue of art press 2, which features articles by both researchers and collaborators of DOCAM, such as "From 'Here and Then' to 'There and Now'" by Jon Ippolito, "Iteration, Infinity and Decay: New Media and the Practice of Documentation" by Corina MacDonald, "The Evolution of Authenticity: Objects and Intent in the Art World" by Caitlin Jones, an interview with artist Gary Hill conducted by Jean Gagnon, as well as an article entitled "Issues in the Development of Teaching Curricula for the Documentation of Media Art" by Sylvie Lacerte, the instructor of this year's DOCAM Seminar, which is being offered at Université du Québec à Montréal (UQÀM). Many of the DOCAM researchers will be present and invited to answer questions and facilitate informal discussions with the public.
Following the presentations, all will be invited to visit the current exhibition of media artist Antoni Muntadas (New York / Barcelona), MUNTADAS. The Construction of Fear, on view at the SBC Gallery from February 28 to April 18, 2009.
