Digital Archiving: format conversion and archiving [links] sticky icon

One of the fundamental assumptions behind DPAC is that the memory gap society faces as a result of technology change is enormous and widespread, and generally not being tackled well enough.

We need to begin assessing the issue properly and collecting information to use to assert our case in funding apps and promotions. Here are some links I'm currently finding on the 'net that will be useful in building our case and planning the archiving process.

AGM Confirmed for Friday, May 01, 2:00 - 4:00 pm

Our first Annual General Meeting of the society will take place at the Roundhouse Community Center in Vancouver on May 01, 2009, from 2:00-4:00. We will be meeting in Room C. I hope you'll book off a bit of time after as well. I'll post a meeting agenda on Monday, but our main goal will be to finalize some business of setting up the society and to lay out our strategic plan for the first year of operation. This is a general public call to all interested in the society and in becoming members as well. Hope to see you there.

AGM Meeting Dates

Hi Folks,

I am trying to set up a date for the AGM. I have booked the roundhouse community center in Vancouver for May 02, but Francis cannot make it. I need to get a sense if we are able to meet on a Friday, say between 2-4 pm. If so, I'll change the date to May 01. If not, we may need to try for a Sunday. So, perhaps a poll? I will contact all personally this weekend to see if I can find a date that works for everyone. (We need all the directors there to have a quorum.)

Open Archival Information System

The Open Archival Information System (ISO 14721:2003) is an ISO standard written to address a problem like ours: enduring archives of interest to a particular community. It was defined after the problem was addressed by the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (that's right, SPACE agencies!).

I suggest that we use this standard as an organising method. I will post the PDF here later, but for now you can get it and read it from the CCSDS website by downloading it directly.

Internet = poetry boom

The Guardian is running a story about how social networking and easy publishing is creating a resurgent interest in poetry. The article also references the Poetry Archive project.
